We did a ton of walking around and exploring on our own. Strolling and looking at all of the decorations that the locals put out to decorate their homes was one of my favorite parts.

Hawthorne Hotel: A grand, historic hotel in the heart of Salem, often cited as one of the most haunted places in town.

Hotel Salem: A modern boutique hotel with stylish rooms and a rooftop bar offering great views of the town.

Stepping Stone Inn: I stumbled across this cute Inn as we were walking through town. I would love to go back and stay in an Inn. This one would be on my list. Its perfectly situated right, right beside the Salem Witch Museum.

Where to Eat

Salem offers a variety of dining options, from cozy cafes to fine dining. Some popular spots include:

Polonus European Deli: An accidental find that quickly became a highlight of our entire Boston/Salem weekend. This spot is located right on Essex Street and is run by the most charming, lovely women! They were selling fresh pierogies outside of the shop, which caught my eye, but what kept us going back the entire day was the lovely atmosphere of the place. The women were witty and warm and the overall vibe was just so pleasant. It felt like a little hug and safe place amidst the chaos of Essex street. My sister and I split a delicious kielbasa with sauerkraut and brown mustard, followed by an unforgettable poppy seed pastry. We ended up stopping about four times during our day in Salem to browse the European delicacies and snacks. We loved it so much, we’d return to Salem just for this place!

Turner’s Seafood: A beloved spot for fresh seafood in a historic setting. Although I am not seafood’s biggest fan, I hear that this is a very popular spot if your a seafood lover!

Ledger: Known for its creative New England cuisine, set in a historic bank building.

Gulu-Gulu Café: A casual café with a bohemian vibe. They offer coffee and sandwiches. My sister and I wanted to go here but the line was so long and we did not want to wait. They don’t take reservations, so if you go in October, be prepared to wait awhile!
