Everything You Need to Know About Renewing Your Passport

This week, I renewed my passport after ten years, and I wanted to share everything I learned along the way! Whether you’re preparing for your renewal or just thinking ahead, here’s a breakdown of passport renewal tips for what to bring, what to expect, and a few helpful tips to make the process smooth and stress-free.

Everything You Need to Know About Renewing Your Passport

Making Your Passport Renewal Appointment

I scheduled my appointment through USPS.com, where I booked a 15-minute slot at my local post office. After scheduling, they mailed me the DS-82 form (the renewal application), which I filled out before my appointment to save time.

Who Is Eligible for Passport Renewal?

If you were at least 16 years old when you got your last passport and it was issued within the last 15 years, you can renew it. Otherwise, you’ll need to apply for a new passport using the DS-11 form (more on that later).

What to Bring to Your Passport Renewal Appointment

If you’re renewing your passport, make sure to have:

  • Your most recent U.S. passport (This will be mailed back to you along with your new one).
  • A passport photo (if you’re bringing your own—more details below).
  • Payment (Check or money order; credit/debit cards aren’t accepted for passport fees).
  • Any supporting documents (e.g., proof of a legal name change, if applicable).
  • Your appointment confirmation (just in case!).

Getting Your Passport Photo Taken

I opted to have my photo taken at my USPS appointment to ensure it met all the requirements. If you’d rather take your own, make sure it follows these guidelines:

  • Taken within the last 6 months
  • Plain white or off-white background
  • No filters, shadows, or overexposure
  • Neutral expression with both eyes open
  • 2×2 inches in size, with correct head positioning

If you’re unsure about the photo requirements, I recommend using a professional service. Many places, like CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid, offer passport photo services, but keep in mind that they do not process passport renewals—they only take the photos.

Passport Photo Tips (From Personal Experience)

  • They’ll ask you to tuck your hair behind your ears so your full face is visible.
  • Technically, you’re supposed to have a neutral expression, but I smiled with teeth, and the USPS worker let it slide—though she did mention they prefer a closed-mouth expression.
  • Your outfit doesn’t really matter since it’s a close-up headshot!

How Long Does It Take to Get Your Passport Back?

Once you submit your renewal, processing times can vary. As of now, the estimated wait times are:

  • Routine Processing: 6 to 8 weeks
  • Expedited Processing: 2 to 3 weeks (for an additional $60 fee)

If you need your passport even sooner, you can schedule an urgent appointment at a passport agency, but availability is limited and usually reserved for those traveling within 14 days.

Your old passport will be returned separately from your new passport, typically arriving a few weeks apart. So don’t worry if your old one doesn’t come back with the new one right away!

How to Submit Your Passport Renewal

If you don’t want to go to the post office, you can renew by mail. Just drop off your renewal application at any of the following locations:

  • Your home mailbox (USPS picks it up)
  • FedEx or UPS (if using a third-party passport service)

If you prefer in-person assistance, you can also visit:

  • Some public libraries
  • Local clerk of court offices
  • Passport agencies (by appointment only—usually for urgent travel)

There are also third-party services, like passport expediting companies, but they charge extra fees.

Tips Before Your Appointment

  • Prepare everything the night before – Have your documents and payment ready to avoid last-minute scrambling.
  • Save the address of your appointment location in your phone for easy navigation.
  • Give yourself extra time to get ready – Since this photo will be with you for 10 years, I wanted to make sure I did my hair and makeup the way I liked before heading out!

Getting a New Passport Instead of Renewing

If you’re under 16 or applying for a passport for the first time, you won’t use the renewal process. Instead, you’ll need to fill out a DS-11 form and apply in person as if it’s a brand-new passport.

Planning Your Next Adventure?

I can’t wait for hopefully another 10 years of travel! If you’re looking for inspiration for your next international travel getaway, check out the magical Christmas markets in Germany or take a charming day trip to Merano and Bolzano in South Tyrol—both perfect destinations for your next adventure!

All in All

I hope you loved these passport renewal tips! Double-check your documents and plan ahead to avoid any delays. If your passport is expiring soon, don’t wait too long—some countries require at least six months of validity to enter!

Wishing you safe travels and a passport filled with stamps, stories, and unforgettable adventures!
