Best Christmas Market in Dresden: Dresdener Striezelmarkt

·

As the holiday season unfolds, one cannot help but be captivated by the charm and magic that Christmas markets bring in Germany. Dresden is one of the main cities know for their many Christmas markets. One in particular, the Dresdener Striezelmarkt, stands out as an iconic celebration that weaves together history, tradition, and a nostalgic Christmas feel, which is why I feel it is the best Christmas market in Dresden.

Dresden Striezelmarkt - Christmas Market in Dresden, Germany

Established in 1434, the Dresdener Striezelmarkt holds the distinguished title of being the oldest Christmas market in Germany. Steeped in centuries of tradition, this market has become a timeless testament to the enduring spirit of Christmas. Nestled in the heart of Dresden’s city center, the market transforms the historic Altmarkt area into a winter wonderland, drawing locals and visitors alike into its festive embrace.

Dresden Striezelmarkt Ferris Wheel - Christmas Market in Dresden, Germany

One of the defining features that sets the Dresdener Striezelmarkt apart is its magnificent ferris wheel. Towering above the market, this iconic structure adds an extra layer of enchantment, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding festive stalls and the twinkling lights that adorn the market. A ride on the Ferris wheel is not just a recreational experience; it’s a journey into the romantic heart of the Christmas season.

The market officially opens its gates at the end of November, heralding the beginning of the festive season. This enchanting celebration continues daily until Christmas Eve, allowing ample time for locals and tourists to immerse themselves in the magical atmosphere. The central location of the Dresdener Striezelmarkt makes it easily accessible, either by a leisurely walk or convenient public transportation.

During the Striezelmarkt period, the Altmarkt area takes on a unique character. To enhance the festive ambiance and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all, the area becomes a pedestrian paradise, closed to all vehicles other than essential delivery vehicles. This measure not only adds to the market’s charm but also allows visitors to stroll through the market at their own pace, taking in the sights, sounds, and scents of the season without the hustle and bustle of traffic.

As you meander through the Dresdener Striezelmarkt, you’ll discover a treasure trove of artisanal crafts, festive decorations, and delectable treats. From handcrafted ornaments to traditional Striezel (a type of Christmas cake), the market offers a delightful array of gifts and goodies to suit every taste.

Christmas in Dresden

I believe Dresden is one of the best city’s to go to for Christmas markets in Germany. Dresden is full of history and architecture and during the Christmas season, is full of Christmas markets! Venturing within the city center, where the iconic Dresdener Striezelmarkt unfolds its festive splendor, we found ourselves effortlessly exploring multiple markets in a single night. Here is my second favorite market to the Dresdener Striezelmarkt that is walking distance away.

  • Advent auf dem Neumarkt – The “Advent on the Neumarkt” is located in front of the Frauenkirche. The market fills the square starting on November 30th through January 7th. I highly recommend trying a Handbrot (German stuffed bread with ham and cheese). We saw everyone in line for them and had to jump in to try some for ourselves and they did not disappoint!

Dresden Specialties

  • Dresdener Stollen

While you are in Dresden, make sure you have a try of some stollen, a traditional German fruit cake that came from Dresden! You are sure to find some as there are so many little shops selling it. Look specifically for the Dresdener Stollen, as this is the famous one that dates back to the 14th century first baked at the Saxon Royal Court.

  • Lebkuchen – Delicious, soft gingerbread that is a must try in Dresden during the Christmas season.
