Ultimate Chicago Travel Guide: Top Places to Stay, Eat, and Explore

·

Ahhh, Chicago! The Windy City. You feel it as soon as you arrive—the breeze coming off Lake Michigan and the buzz of the city. I recently visited Chicago for a work trip in April, and I hit many of the must-see attractions, soaked in the local culture, and discovered a few spots I can’t wait to recommend. Whether you’re here for business or pleasure, Chicago has so much to offer, and if you’re lucky enough to visit in March for St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll see the Chicago River dyed green—a sight that’s high on my list for next time!

In this guide, I’ll share where to stay, what to do, and where to eat during your two-day adventure in Chicago!

Where to Stay:

We stayed at the Fairmont Chicago in Millennium Park, and it was fantastic. Centrally located, it’s just a five-minute walk from The Bean and the Riverwalk, which made sightseeing a breeze. What to Do During the Day:

Go Sightseeing:

The best way to experience Chicago is on foot. I covered so much ground just walking around, and I highly recommend it if you can! Here are some highlights:

  • Navy Pier
The iconic Navy Pier is a must-see, especially in the summer when you can take in the beautiful views of Lake Michigan. Take a spin on the Ferris wheel for a panoramic view of the skyline, or simply stroll along the pier to soak up the atmosphere.
  • The Riverwalk
This stretch along the Chicago River is one of the most scenic ways to explore the city. Lined with cafes and unique public art, it’s a great spot for a leisurely walk or even a boat ride. Pro tip: Make sure to check out the stunning mix of old and modern architecture.

  • The Bean (Cloud Gate)
Yes, it’s touristy, but it’s iconic! While under construction during my visit, I still managed to get a great photo with the famous mirrored sculpture. A must for first-time visitors!

  • Tribune Tower
Located on Michigan Avenue, the Tribune Tower is one of Chicago’s most historic and striking buildings. Originally the headquarters of the Chicago Tribune, this neo-Gothic skyscraper was completed in 1925 and features fragments of famous structures from around the world, such as the Great Wall of China and the Parthenon in Greece, embedded in its exterior. Even if you’re not a history buff, it’s worth a visit just to see the remarkable architecture and touch pieces of world history. The Chicago Tribune itself, founded in 1847, is one of the city’s oldest and most respected newspapers, and the building remains an enduring symbol of Chicago’s role in journalism and media.
