Packing Essentials
Shoes
Germany is a walking-friendly country, so comfortable, warm footwear is key. Here are the shoes I recommend packing for Germany in Winter:
- Comfortable walking shoes:
- Recommendation: Doc Martens are a perfect choice—they’re stylish, warm, and provide solid grip for icy streets.
- Casual sneakers:
- Adidas Stan Smiths or Nike Air Force Ones are great for daytime exploration. They’re comfortable and easy to pair with any outfit.
- Elevated evening boots:
- A heeled bootie adds a touch of sophistication for nights out. Opt for insulated options and wear them with thick socks to stay warm.
Bottoms
Packing for Germany in Winter, you’ll want to keep your legs warm but also able to still move around. We did a ton of walking and I wanted to make sure I was comfortable, but still warm and stylish. Mix practicality and style for versatile outfits that can handle both sightseeing and dining out.
- Jeans:
- Pack a variety: black for sleek looks, gray for variety, and dark blue for casual outings.
- Leggings:
- Black leggings are a must-have. They’re ideal for lounging, layering, or pairing with a long sweater for casual outings.
- Leather pants:
- Not only do they add flair to your wardrobe, but they’re also surprisingly warm and perfect for dinner dates or evenings out.
Tops
- Tank tops:
- Perfect for layering, these keep your core warm under sweaters or turtlenecks.
- Turtlenecks:
- A winter staple. Wear them alone for a minimalist look or layer under a chunky sweater for extra warmth.
- Sweaters:
- Bring a couple of versatile, cozy sweaters. Neutral tones like beige, gray, or black will complement your outfits effortlessly.
Outerwear
I’d say my number 1 tip for packing for Germany in Winter is having a coat that you can wear with any outfit and keeps you warm. I only brought one coat with me and wore it the entire time. I wore my LL Bean weatherproof parka that I’ve had for years.
- Weatherproof coat:
- An LL Bean parka or a similar insulated, waterproof coat is a lifesaver for Germany’s unpredictable winter weather. Choose one in a neutral color for versatility.
- Packable Down Jacket:
A lightweight, packable option is great for layering or days when the weather isn’t as harsh. - Fashionable coat
- My brother’s girlfriend, Georgia, found this adorable, trendy coat from Marshall’s! This coat is a great option to bump up an outfit when it’s not raining or snowing!
Accessories
- Warm hats:
- Keep your ears protected with a snug beanie or fleece-lined hat.
- Gloves:
- Essential for wandering around outdoor markets. Opt for touchscreen-friendly gloves so you can still use your phone.
- Scarves:
- I bought a white scarf specifically for this trip because I knew it would go with all my outfits and I’m so thankful I did. It was my most worn scarf on the trip. To change up my look some nights, I wore red lipstick or changed my shoes. It goes with everything and I was so glad I brought it!
- Thick socks:
- Wool or thermal socks are a must to keep your feet warm on long days out.
- Crossbody purse:
- Practical and secure, a crossbody bag is perfect for keeping your valuables safe and your hands free for shopping or sipping hot cocoa.
Tips for Navigating Germany in Winter
1. Staying Warm at Outdoor Markets
German Christmas markets are a highlight of any winter trip, but they can get chilly.
- Dress in layers to adapt to the fluctuating temperatures between warm market stalls and outdoor spaces.
- Grab a warm drink, like glühwein (mulled wine), to keep your hands and body warm as you explore. Hot cocoa works great too!
- Bring cash, as many market vendors don’t accept cards.
2. Navigating Train Schedules
Germany’s train system is efficient but can face delays in winter due to weather.
- Download the DB Navigator app: It’s a lifesaver for real-time updates on train schedules.
- Allow extra time for transfers, especially during heavy snow or icy conditions.
- Reserve seats for longer trips to ensure comfort during busy travel times.
- It was honestly a lot of work to lug large suitcases on and off the train. I recommend packing light if you know you are going to be doing a lot of travel by train on your trip. I know next time, instead of taking a large checked bag, I would try to fit everything in a carry-on suitcase and a backpack.
3. Traveling Between Cities
Winter can impact driving conditions, so consider public transportation for intercity travel.
- Trains: The ICE (Intercity-Express) is fast, comfortable, and reliable.
- Buses: Companies like FlixBus offer affordable options for budget travelers.
- Car rentals: If you opt for a car, ensure it’s equipped with winter tires and familiarize yourself with German winter driving laws.
Extras to Consider
- Reusable Water Bottle:
- Stay hydrated, especially if you’re spending time indoors with heating that can dry you out.
- Moisturizer and Lip Balm:
- Protect your skin and lips from the cold, dry air.
- Travel Umbrella:
- For rainy or snowy days, a compact umbrella can be a game-changer.
- Portable Charger:
- Keep your phone charged for maps, photos, or emergencies while you’re on the go.
Tips for Winter Travel
1. Dressing for the Cold
- Layers are your best friend. Start with a base layer (tank top or thermal), add a turtleneck or sweater, and finish with a warm coat.
- Invest in thermal leggings or tights for layering under jeans on extra cold days.
2. Packing Smart
- Stick to neutral colors so you can mix and match effortlessly.
- Use packing cubes to organize your winter clothes, which can be bulkier than summer outfits.
3. Adapting to Activities
- For outdoor adventures (skiing, hiking, or winter markets), prioritize functionality with waterproof outerwear and boots.
- For indoor activities (museums, dinners), focus on layering pieces you can easily remove in heated spaces.
I packed most of these items when I traveled to Germany in the winter, and they worked perfectly for days wandering through Christmas markets, snowy villages, and urban adventures. No matter where your winter trip takes you, these essentials will help you stay cozy and chic throughout your journey!
