Location

Iris Inn - Virginia Getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains

The Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley, often referred to as Virginia’s Cabin Capital, have long been among Virginia’s most beloved places to retreat–where hiking trails, waterfalls, picturesque scenery, and rolling vineyards offer an easy return to nature.

Though the setting feels secluded, Iris Inn is less than ten minutes from charming downtown Waynesboro, a small historic town lined with bookstores, coffee shops, intimate museums and galleries, and roughly half an hour from Charlottesville–with plenty to do including walking the grounds at the University of Virginia or exploring the food, beer, and wine scene along Route 151. Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and the Blue Ridge Parkway are also nearby, placing miles of hiking trails, mountain overlooks, and waterfalls within easy reach.

Its location also makes it an easy weekend trip from both Richmond and Washington, D.C. For anyone looking to escape the city without a long drive, the inn offers an easy way to trade traffic and noise for mountain air and sweeping valley views.

Rooms

Spread across 19 acres, Iris Inn is an intimate mountain retreat with 15 accommodations, including guest rooms in the main inn as well as private cabins and cottages tucked along the hillside. Floor-to-ceiling windows and private decks take full advantage of the sweeping Shenandoah Valley views, while features like fireplaces, the spa, and walking trails make the property feel designed for slowing down.

Dining

In the morning, the inn slowly came to life. Soft sounds came from the kitchen as the sun rose higher and higher among the trees and mountain peaks, followed by the unmistakable scent of bacon that soon filled the hallway and coaxed guests from their rooms. On quieter mornings like the one during my stay, breakfast is plated and served in the main inn’s dining room rather than the usual buffet – an artfully crafted three-course spread that made the start of the day feel especially leisurely and luxurious.

By evening, the same dining room takes on an entirely different atmosphere. The bright calm of breakfast gives way to a more refined setting — white tablecloths draped across the tables, soft candlelight flickering beside the glow of a wood-burning fireplace, large windows revealing an indigo sky settling over the surrounding woodland, and soft instrumental music flowing gently through the room.

Around dinner, the front porch of the inn offers one of the best vantage points on the property — a perfect place to step outside and admire the sunset as it sinks behind the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Returning to the dining room with a glass of local Cabernet Franc in hand felt like the perfect way to begin the evening’s three-course meal.

Innkeeper Cathie recommended the warm spinach salad and the brussels sprout salad to begin — both comforting winter starters. For the main course, I chose the ribs, followed by Cathie’s suggestion for dessert: the sticky toffee pudding. The dish arrived topped with a surprising crunch of caramel popcorn, a decadent final course that made for the perfect ending to a quiet mountain evening.

Amenities

Beyond the guest rooms and dining experience, the property invites guests to slow down and take in the surrounding landscape. A walking trail winds around the property through the wooded hillside, offering quiet moments to breathe in the mountain air and stretch your legs. For those seeking deeper relaxation, the inn also offers spa services including massages and facials, while many of the private cabins feature fireplaces and outdoor hot tubs designed for lingering evenings under the stars.

In the evenings, guests can gather around the outdoor fire pit for s’mores, adding a playful and nostalgic touch to a quiet night in the mountains.

Who It’s For

While the inn feels especially suited for romantic getaways — and many couples come for exactly that — the relaxed atmosphere also makes it welcoming for solo travelers, small groups of friends, or anyone looking for a quiet retreat in the mountains. Its proximity to Shenandoah National Park, Charlottesville’s wineries, and the surrounding hiking trails makes it an ideal base for both relaxation and exploration.
