13 Things to Do in Oxford, Maryland

Looking for the best things to do in Oxford, Maryland? This peaceful waterfront town on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is filled with charm, history, and small-town beauty that invites you to slow down and savor every moment. Whether you’re here for a romantic weekend, a sister getaway, or a solo reset, Oxford offers the perfect mix of relaxation and discovery.
Here are 13 of my favorite things to do in Oxford, Maryland—from sipping coffee and watching sailboats drift by to indulging in some of the best ice cream in the country.
1. Stay at Sandaway Suites & Beach

Start your visit with a stay at the stunning Sandaway Suites & Beach. This adults-only inn sits on the Tred Avon River and offers private beach access, cozy porches, and thoughtful details that make you feel right at home. I recommend the Deluxe Second Floor Suite
2. Watch the Sunset

Oxford has some of the most peaceful sunset views on the Eastern Shore. Catch golden hour from the lawn at Sandaway, where Adirondack chairs overlook the water, or head to the small waterfront park across from Scottish Highland Creamery.
Sunset Grille (Latitude 38) is a nice, casual spot for dinner. It is right on the water and a great spot to catch the sunset!
3. Take the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry

Hop aboard the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, the oldest privately operated ferry in the U.S., running since 1683! It’s a short, scenic ride across the Tred Avon River and a lovely way to see the area from the water.
4. Indulge at Scottish Highland Creamery

Ranked one of the best ice cream shops in the country, Scottish Highland Creamery is a must. With seasonal flavors like Peaches & Cream and Fresh Blueberry to classic like Mint Chocolate Chip and Birthday Cake, it’s the perfect treat after dinner or during a mid-day stroll.

5. Grab Breakfast or Pizza at Oxford Market & Deli

This little market is great for grabbing coffee, breakfast sandwiches, snacks, wine, and incredible pizza (only available on Fridays—do not miss the buffalo chicken!). It’s the go-to for both locals and visitors.
They offer drip coffee, but we were wanting a specialty espresso style coffee, so we headed across the street to the Oxford Social Cafe (more info below).

6. Sip Coffee at Oxford Social Cafe & The Coffee Trappe

Oxford Social Cafe is a cozy stop for coffee, baked goods, and ice cream year-round. It is the Scottish Highland Creamery’s sister location–but focusing on coffee.
My sister ordered a peppermint latte (we love peppermint all year round, and usually if a shop still has it in the spring and summer months, we will order it)! I opted for the pistachio latte though, as I am a sucker for anything pistachio flavor, including ice cream. We also couldn’t resist an iced raspberry lemon scone to bring back to our room at Sandaway while we both did some work.

Looking for a sit-down breakfast or specialty latte? The Coffee Trappe offers cozy vibes, cappuccinos, and classic breakfast plates. We loved the pancakes and indulged in a butterscotch latte and cappuccino.

7. Stroll the Town and Spot Painted Picket Fences

Oxford is meant for walking. Stroll the quiet streets lined with colorful cottages and white picket fences—many of which are hand-painted with local artwork. My sister and I turned it into a game to count how many we could find!
8. Visit the Oxford Museum
Take a peek into the past at the Oxford Museum, where you’ll find local artifacts, maritime stories, and pieces of the town’s rich colonial and shipbuilding history. It’s small, sweet, and full of character.
I believe they also have a walking guided tour of the town!
9. Explore on Two Wheels
Bring your own or rent a bike and explore the flat, scenic streets of Oxford. You’ll pass by waterfront homes, gardens, and charming alleyways—plus, it’s the easiest way to see more of the town.
10. Discover Local Books & Browse for Hidden Gems

Stop by Mystery Loves Company Booksellers, a delightful bookstore located in a historic bank building. You’ll find everything from regional reads and mysteries to cookbooks and bestsellers.
If you’re lucky, your visit might coincide with the Oxford Library Book Sale, a community favorite for finding secondhand treasures. Perfect for grabbing a book to enjoy by the bay.

11. Shop Around Town

Oxford may be small, but it’s home to a handful of lovely shops. The Treasure Chest offers coastal-inspired gifts, local art, books, jewelry, and fun souvenirs to take home. Whether you’re looking for a keepsake or a little something for someone special, it’s a great place to browse.
12. Swim or Paddle on the Tred Avon River

On warm days, head to Oxford Town Park for a dip at the public beach. The water is calm and perfect for a swim or simply relaxing by the shoreline. If you’re feeling adventurous, bring a kayak or paddleboard and explore the river at your own pace. You’ll likely spot herons, ospreys, and all kinds of peaceful shoreline views.
13. Visit the Robert Morris Inn & Dine at The Financier

Step back in time at the Robert Morris Inn, built in 1710 and one of America’s oldest full-service inns. Author James Michener once called their crabcakes the best in the region. Their on-site restaurant, The Financier, offers a blend of historic charm and locally inspired cuisine.
All in all,

There’s something undeniably special about Oxford, Maryland. It’s not a place to rush through—it’s a place to slow down, breathe deep, and take in the beauty around you. Whether you’re coming for a relaxing weekend or just passing through, I hope this list of things to do in Oxford, Maryland helps you plan a trip full of joy and charm.
