The first weekend of my study abroad experience, a group of us girls planned a trip to Florence and Tuscany—our first adventure beyond Lugano.

We were based in Lugano, Switzerland, nestled in Canton Ticino, the only Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. Since we were so close to Italy, it felt like the perfect choice for our first weekend getaway.

Staying Steps Away From the Duomo

We booked an Airbnb in Florence, and I’ll never forget walking out onto the street and seeing a glimpse of the Duomo di Firenze at the end. I had one of those surreal moments, thinking, Wow, I really can’t believe this is my life right now.

Wine Tasting in Tuscany: A Perfect First Experience

For our Saturday adventure, we booked a wine tasting tour that picked us up in Florence and took us deep into the rolling hills of Tuscany. Before heading to the pick-up location we grabbed a quick breakfast/lunch at Shake Café, not too far from the Duomo for açaí bowls and coffee.

Then, we took off walking to our pickup location and enjoying the beautiful sights along the way. The ride to Tuscany was about an hour long, and the incredible views continued with the landscape changing from bustling city to lush countryside.

We were headed to Poggio Amorelli in Castellina in Chianti, Italy— and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

The Poggio Amorelli Experience

From the moment we arrived, we were in awe. The estate was exactly how I imagined Tuscany—sprawling vineyards, golden light hitting the hills just right, and a rustic charm that felt straight out of a movie. Cue Under the Tuscan Sun, if you know what I mean!

The staff was incredibly warm and knowledgeable, guiding us through an intimate wine tasting and food pairing in their stunning barrel room. Each sip of Chianti Classico and Super Tuscan was perfectly complemented by locally made cheeses, fresh olive oil, and homemade balsamic vinegar.

One of my favorite parts? Sitting at a long, family-style table and striking up conversations with other travelers. We ended up chatting with a group from New York, which made the experience feel even more special—it’s always fun when the world feels small.

Taking Tuscany Home with You

Their gift shop was stocked with all the varieties of wine we had tasted—plus their incredible olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I brought some home as a gift for my mom, and it made the perfect little piece of Tuscany to share.

If you fall in love with one of their wines but don’t want to worry about packing bottles in your luggage, Poggio Amorelli makes it easy—they offer international shipping, including to the U.S. Orders typically arrive within 3–4 weeks via FedEx, and shipping includes insurance. It’s the perfect way to relive your Tuscan wine tasting from home.

Back to Florence: Nightlife & Sightseeing

That night, we set out to explore more of Florence! We had heard from our RA’s on the trip that there was a bar in Florence that a lot of Virginia Tech students had visited. We went, but I can’t remember for the life of me what it was called!

A Classic Florentine Morning

The next morning, we grabbed breakfast at Piazza dell’Unità Italiana, kicking off the day with mimosas and cappuccinos before wandering the city. Florence is truly a dream for walking and exploring, and we made the most of it.

Some highlights from the day:

All in all…

Our first weekend abroad was a success! I couldn’t believe I was already wrapping up my first travel weekend. It felt like a dream come true—exploring new places, meeting new friends, and experiencing Tuscany’s magic together. If this was just the beginning, I couldn’t wait to see what the rest of my study abroad adventure had in store. If you love wine, Tuscany should be at the top of your list!

Movie or Music Rec?

  • The Lizzie McGuire Movie. My favorite movie growing up. If you are studying abroad in Italy or planning on going to Italy during your Study Abroad trip–you have to watch or rewatch this movie. Especially if you are going to Rome!!
  • Under The Tuscan Sun!!! If you are headed to Tuscany, watch this movie for the ultimate Tuscan romance vibes. You never know, this could be you. 👀 When in Rome! Or should I say, when in Tuscany! 🍷🌅
