If You Book the Oberammergau Tour

Oberammergau Tour

I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Neuschwanstein Castle. This stop on the way there and back from the castle was the best surprise. Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, this picturesque village feels like it’s been plucked straight from the pages of a storybook. Known for its enchanted houses adorned with stunning Lüftlmalerei (traditional frescoes), Oberammergau is a place where history and whimsy intertwine beautifully.

The town has deep ties to the legends of the Brothers Grimm, with many of the frescoes depicting scenes from their famous fairytales. Strolling through Oberammergau is like stepping into a magical world, with murals of Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White gracing the walls of its homes and buildings. If you were a Brothers Grimm fan growing up, you will love this place!

Beyond its artistic charm, Oberammergau is also famous for its Passion Play, a tradition dating back to 1634. Performed every 10 years, it’s a world-renowned theatrical reenactment of the life and death of Jesus Christ.

During our stop here, I loved browsing the quaint shops for unique, handcrafted souvenirs. The wood carvings and Christmas ornaments make excellent gifts or keepsakes. It’s also the perfect place to grab a warm drink or snack before continuing on to Neuschwanstein Castle.

Start the Day: Arrival and Scenic Exploration

Neuschwanstein Castle

Upon arrival at Neuschwanstein Castle, take a moment to admire the breathtaking scenery. Don’t miss Alpsee Lake, located nearby, where the shimmering water and mountainous backdrop create a serene and picturesque setting. It’s the perfect spot for a quick walk or photo op before starting your ascent to the castle.

Nearby Gems You Shouldn’t Miss

  • Hohenschwangau Castle: Just down the hill from Neuschwanstein Castle, this yellow castle was the childhood home of King Ludwig II. Built by his father, King Maximilian II, it provides a fascinating look at Ludwig’s early life and offers a stark contrast to the whimsical design of Neuschwanstein Castle.

  • Linderhof Palace: If you have extra time, I highly recommend a tour of Linderhof Palace, another of Ludwig’s masterpieces. Its ornate interiors and gorgeous gardens make it a must-see. There’s also a wonderful souvenir shop nearby where I picked up postcards, snow globes, and ornaments to bring home as gifts.

Take in the Views: Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge)

Neuschwanstein Castle

A visit to Neuschwanstein Castle wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge). The bridge offers the best panoramic view of the castle, with its towers rising majestically against the rugged alpine landscape. It’s a short walk from the castle, and the photo opportunities here are unbeatable.
