Cape Charles… you’ll love our town.” That was what the welcome sign promised as we turned left toward Virginia’s beautiful Eastern Shore. It couldn’t have been more true.

We timed it perfectly, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel just as the sun dipped low. Then, we drove into Cape Charles at golden hour to surprise our friend Kate for her birthday. From that first sunset, Cape Charles felt warm, welcoming, and quietly special. It was exactly the kind of place you come to celebrate, relax, and simply be.

A Birthday Weekend in Cape Charles, Virginia

Over the summer, we spent a long weekend celebrating Kate’s birthday in Cape Charles, a small town on Virginia’s Eastern Shore with just over 1,000 residents. It had been on my travel list for years, but I never quite made it there—until this trip. Kate’s boyfriend, Hunter, surprised her by inviting our friend Brooke and me to join them. This turned it into a laid-back birthday weekend filled with good food, slow mornings, and time by the water.

Our days were spent exploring town, enjoying fresh seafood, and relaxing along the calm shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Cape Charles was exactly as I imagined–quaint, charming, inviting, and tranquil.

Top Things to Do in Cape Charles, Virginia

If you’re planning a weekend and searching for the best things to do in Cape Charles, Virginia, these are the some of the things that we did that made us all fall in love with Cape Charles!

1. Post Dinner Ice Cream Run to Brown Dog Ice Cream

One of the sweetest rituals in Cape Charles is grabbing a cone from Brown Dog Ice Cream and wandering through the quiet streets–perfect for an evening stroll but really any time of the day!

2. Start your morning with coffee and a sit-down breakfast

One morning, we stopped into Cape Charles Coffee House, and it quickly became a favorite. Set inside a beautifully restored historic building, the space feels colonial-inspired and timeless—warm wood tones, thoughtful details, and an atmosphere that invites you to linger. You can grab coffees to go, but it’s just as lovely to sit down and enjoy breakfast before heading out for the day. Moreover, it’s the kind of slow morning that pairs perfectly with a relaxed itinerary.

3. Browse for a book to bring to the beach

There’s something especially charming about popping into a local bookstore while traveling. At Peach Street Books, you can pick out a book to read by the water or slowly browse on a quiet morning or afternoon. We even bought a few books to use as gifts–Kate bought a children’s book for her niece’s birthday and I bought a coffee table book about coffee (Ha!) for a friend’s birthday. We spent a good while browsing this cute bookstore. They even serve coffee!

Book
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

I picked up one of my favorite books ever read to me–Where the Red Fern Grown by Wilson Rawls. One of my favorite teachers that I ever had in school, my fifth grade teacher, Ms. James read this to our class and I will never forget it. The story, the way she read, and the atmosphere she created for us was so rare. It had my whole class in tears when she finished the short novel. I hope I’ll be able to read this to my kids one day!

4. Spend an unhurried afternoon at the beach

The public beach in Cape Charles is calm, walkable, and ideal for swimming, reading, or simply sitting by the water.

5. Enjoy fresh seafood with a waterfront view

For a classic Cape Charles meal, we loved dining at The Shanty, a popular waterfront spot known for oysters, seafood, and marina views.

6. Wander slowly down the main street

Walking along Mason Avenue is one of the simplest joys of visiting Cape Charles. Lined with boutiques, galleries, and locally owned shops, it’s the heart of town.

We enjoyed some homemade Hugo Spritz’ at our Airbnb that Brooke made us before heading to dinner!

9. Step back in time at the local candy store

One of the most charming stops in town is Rayfield’s Pharmacy & Soda Fountain. Part pharmacy, part soda fountain, part candy store—it feels like stepping into another era.

10. Drink a pint or cocktail at Elephant and Octopus Pub

Stop in for a night cap at Elephant and Octopus Pub right on Mason Avenue. They’re open Monday through Saturday 11:30 until 9 p.m.They serve food too and brunch on Sunday’s!
