The Perfect Charlottesville Girls’ Weekend: A Wine Country Itinerary for Birthdays & Bachelorettes

·
Charlottesville Girls Wine Weekend

There are some places that seem made for gathering your favorite people together, and Charlottesville is one of them.

Nestled in Virginia wine country and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville offers the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. You can spend your morning sipping coffee at a local café, your afternoon winery hopping through the mountains, and your evening gathered around a fire pit with friends.

This spring, I went on a Charlottesville Girls’ trip to celebrate my friend’s birthdays. Between the wineries, mountain views, cozy accommodations, and laid-back pace, I couldn’t help but think how easily this same weekend could just as easily become the perfect bachelorette weekend, girls’ getaway, or birthday celebration. In fact, the house next door to ours, which was very similar to where we stayed, happened to be hosting a bachelorette party.

Whether you’re planning a bridal weekend, birthday, reunion with friends, or simply looking for an excuse to spend time with your favorite people, Charlottesville offers the perfect combination of wineries, outdoor adventure, great food, and quality time together.

Picture a house full of girlfriends in sundresses, coffee brewing in the kitchen, mountains just outside the window, and an entire weekend ahead of you with nowhere to be except together. That’s exactly what a Charlottesville wine weekend feels like.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan the perfect Charlottesville girls’ weekend.

At a glance…

✨ Best Views: Hazy Mountain Vineyard

🍷 Favorite Winery: Hazy Mountain

🥐 Breakfast I’ll Always Return To: Belties

🍕 Order This: Hot honey, sausage & onion pizza at Hazy Mountain

☕ Don’t Miss: Fire & Frost

🏡 Stay Here: Afton

Where to Stay

One of the most important decisions you’ll make is where to stay.

For our trip, we stayed at the Afton Clubhouse by Be Still Getaways, and it was the perfect place to host a large group of girls. The house featured multiple bedrooms, a spacious kitchen and living area, a fire pit, outdoor seating, and a hot tub that quickly became one of our favorite gathering spots.

Whether we were drinking coffee in the morning, getting ready for the wineries, or ending the night in the hot tub, the space naturally brought everyone together.Between the spacious layout, hot tub, fire pit, and proximity to wineries, it was easy to see why Afton has become such a popular destination for group celebrations.

Even if you don’t stay at the Afton Clubhouse specifically, I highly recommend looking in Afton when searching for accommodations. The area is beautiful, located near wineries, breweries, hiking trails, and scenic mountain views, making it a great home base for a Charlottesville weekend.

The main attraction for many visitors is, of course, the wineries.

Rather than trying to visit as many as possible, I recommend choosing two or three stops and allowing yourself time to truly enjoy each one.

Our favorite stop of the weekend was Hazy Mountain Vineyard.

Hazy Mountain Charlottesville Virginia

The views here are absolutely breathtaking. Large windows frame panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounding valley, and the entire property feels more like Tuscany than Virginia. I ordered the Riesling flight and loved every pour.

If you take one recommendation from this guide, let it be this: plan your lunch at Hazy Mountain. My friend Kate and I split a hot honey, sausage, and onion pizza on cauliflower crust, which was every bit as delicious as it sounds.

Our second winery stop was Pippin Hill.

Pippin Hill Charlottesville Virginia

If Hazy Mountain impressed me with its views, Pippin Hill impressed me with its atmosphere. We spent hours sipping rosé, taking photos, playing games, and enjoying one of those perfect Virginia afternoons where nobody wanted to leave.

I’ve attended a wedding at Pippin Hill before, and as we were leaving, another wedding was being set up on the property. It’s easy to understand why it’s one of the area’s most sought-after venues.

Originally, we planned to continue on to  Bold Rock Cidery, afterward, but we were enjoying ourselves so much that we decided to stay longer at Pippin Hill instead.

Sometimes the best part of a trip is leaving room for spontaneity.

For Groups That Prefer More Than Wine

Bold Rock Cidery, Wintergreen, VA

One of the things I love about Charlottesville is that there truly is something for everyone.

If not everyone in your group is a wine drinker, consider adding a few of these local favorites to your itinerary:

These stops offer a great alternative while still providing the same beautiful mountain scenery and relaxed atmosphere.

Get Outside

Another reason Charlottesville makes such a great girls’ weekend destination is its proximity to outdoor adventures.

If your group enjoys being active, consider adding a hike to your itinerary before heading to the wineries.

Popular options include:

You could easily spend the morning exploring the mountains and the afternoon enjoying wine country. Check out my Wintergreen Guide for more hiking and outdoor ideas!

Explore Downtown Charlottesville

After a day of winery hopping, save one evening to explore Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. One of the longest pedestrian malls in the country, it’s lined with locally owned restaurants, boutiques, cocktail bars, coffee shops, and live music venues, making it a fun place to wander without a set plan.

If you’re looking for rooftop views, grab a cocktail at UP on the Roof, where you’ll find panoramic views of Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s an ideal spot to toast the weekend before dinner.

If your group would rather keep the night going, downtown also has plenty of live music. Check the schedule at The Southern Café and Music Hall or stop by Miller’s Downtown, a longtime Charlottesville favorite known for nightly performances and local history.

Whether you end the night with rooftop cocktails, live music, or simply strolling the Downtown Mall with an ice cream in hand, it’s the perfect way to round out a girls’ weekend in Charlottesville.

Visit Nearby Attractions

If you’re extending your trip, Charlottesville is also close to several other attractions worth exploring.

Luray Caverns makes for an excellent day trip and offers a completely different experience from the wineries. The caverns are one of Virginia’s most unique natural attractions and can easily be added to a long weekend itinerary.

How to Get Around

Ambassador Limo Charlottesville Girls' Trip

One of the smartest decisions we made was arranging transportation in advance. Since everyone in our group wanted to enjoy the wineries without worrying about driving, booking transportation ahead of time ended up being one of the best decisions we made.

For our winery day, we booked a party bus through Ambassador Limousine, which picked us up directly from the house and transported us between wineries before returning us safely at the end of the day.

Not only did this make the day more enjoyable, but it allowed everyone to relax and fully enjoy the experience.

If you’re planning a bachelorette party or larger girls’ trip, I highly recommend booking transportation ahead of time.

Where to Eat

One of my favorite things about the Charlottesville and Afton area is that the food is just as memorable as the wineries. Whether you’re looking for a cozy breakfast before a day of wine tasting, a laid-back brewery for your first night, or incredible pizza with mountain views, these are the places I’d recommend adding to your itinerary.

Belties

If you’re staying in Afton, start your morning at Belties. I tried Beltie’s for the first time on a girl’s weekend to Wintergreen in the spring a few months ago and it is the best breakfast spot in the mountains! It’s one of my favorite breakfast spots in Virginia and somewhere I’d happily return again and again. Their biscuit sandwiches, pastries, coffee, and famous pot pie in a mug make it the perfect place to fuel up before heading to the wineries. We loved it so much we went both mornings of our trip.

Blue Mountain Brewery

For your first evening, head to Blue Mountain Brewery. We arrived Friday after checking into our Airbnb, and it was the perfect way to kick off the weekend. Between the mountain views, outdoor patio, string lights, and relaxed atmosphere, it’s an easy recommendation for groups.

Plan Lunch at Hazy Mountain

One tip I’d absolutely recommend is planning your lunch stop at Hazy Mountain Vineyard.. The mountain views may be what initially draw you in, but the food is reason enough to stay awhile. Their pizzas were some of the best we had all weekend, and they offer gluten-free options as well. My friend Kate and I shared a cauliflower crust pizza topped with sausage, onion, and hot honey, and it was absolutely delicious. Between the wine, lunch, and incredible views, Hazy Mountain can easily fill an entire afternoon.

Fire & Frost

If your weekend includes time around Wintergreen—or you’re making the scenic drive home—make time for Fire & Frost. This cozy wood-fired bakehouse quickly became one of my favorite discoveries in the area. Whether you’re stopping in for a latte and pastry before a hike or sharing a wood-fired pizza after a day in the mountains, it’s one of those places that perfectly matches the slower pace of the Blue Ridge.
